I follow Caitlin on youtube, she’s hilarious and so intelligent, and those are some pretty good reasons to read her books! Are her books just as great as her videos?
Fascinated by our pervasive fear of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty embarks on a global expedition to discover how other cultures care for the dead. From Zoroastrian sky burials to wish-granting Bolivian skulls, she investigates the world’s funerary customs and expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with dignity. Her account questions the rituals of the American funeral industry—especially chemical embalming—and suggests that the most effective traditions are those that allow mourners to personally attend to the body of the deceased. Exquisitely illustrated by artist Landis Blair, From Here to Eternity is an adventure into the morbid unknown, a fascinating tour through the unique ways people everywhere confront mortality.
I love books about death, because death scares me. I don’t believe in a God (I consider myself agnostic), I don’t believe in a Heaven and Hell (though I wish I did!), so what happens after death freaks me out. I love watching Caitlin’s videos because she approaches it all with science, wit, and complete acceptance. And this book is exactly the same!
This is the most respectful book I’ve ever read. Most books about ‘different’ cultures, only feature about one non-white culture, and are all like: “LOok how strange and different and weird this is!!1!!!” and this book isn’t, at all. Caitlin gives everyone the same love and same respect and it’s amazing. Nobody is weird, it’s all just a way to deal with grief and it’s amazing.
I love the stories that were chosen and I wish there were more! And it’s so inclusive, it isn’t just about America or Europe, like most books are, but actually different cultures and their ways to deal with grief and how we can learn things from it.
I don’t know how to describe this amazing book without talking about the entire book and spoiling it. I highly recommend you watching the youtube series and if you like her, you will 100% like her book. If you want to learn more about death and the way people deal with it, I highly recommend this book. If you are a person I highly recommend it!
I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads and you can get your copy here!
