Review: Addicted to Americana by Charles Phoenix

If there’s anything you need to know about me, I love kitchy 50s stuff. This book seemed right up my alley! Let’s have a look:

Title: Addicted to Americana
Author: Charles Phoenix
Pages: 176
Published:  October 10th 2017 by Prospect Park Books
ISBN: 9781945551192

Raised on a used-car lot, Charles Phoenix was destined to become the Ambassador of Americana. The photo collector, food crafter, and field tripper is famed for his hilarious live show performances and “theme park” tour of downtown Los Angeles. This riotously colorful book, replete with Charles’s collection of vintage Kodachrome slides, celebrates his lifelong quest to unearth the best of classic and kitschy American life and style.

First of all, this book is nothing like I expected it to be. I thought this book would be all about kitchy 50s things, but it isn’t! It’s basically a memoir by the author and his collection of Kodaks and the amazing kitchy things he finds in the US. Though, it’s a lot better than I expected! I absolutely adore Charles Phoenix, he seems like such a fun guy to hang out with! This book is full of amazing photo’s, both 50s and 60s photos and ones made over the years with the author himself in it. He travels around the country trying to find highlights from days gone past. It’s absolutely amazing, every single centimeter of the pages is used for photos, and they are gorgeous!

You won’t learn anything from this book, except you’ll get to know the author quite well. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a treasure. I won’t add any photos of the book itself, because this is truly a book you need to get without knowing about the gems that are on the inside. It’s an amazing thing, but only enjoyable if you love kitchy over the top things, otherwise I’d pass it!

I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads and you can get yours here.
