I have read a LOT of books about women. I’ve read Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, I’ve read Bad Girls Through History, I’ve read Princesses Behaving Badly, I’ve read so many! Lately, they are getting a lot more popular (GOOD) and today I’ll be reviewing this one.
Long story short: this book is amazing.
It’s HUGE that’s the first thing you notice when you get it. It’s divided into ratings, the first stories are a lot more “safe” than the last stories. It has trigger warnings on the side of each story, so you as a parent can decide if you want to read a story with your kids or not. And if you have experienced anything horrible in your life that you’d like to avoid, these trigger warnings are great for it too! Noticing this was the first reason why I loved it. Apart from that, it’s hilarious, but doesn’t downplay anything serious. How many people do you know that make fun of mansplaining in their books? Yeah, same.
Humor is used to lighten the mood, not to make fun of something. The stories are interesting too, a lot of the women in this book I’ve never heard of, which is always nice. It’s also brutally honest. A lot of women that are famous now, were actually horrible humanbeings that only did 1 thing right (ahum…) and got famous because of it. The book doesn’t skip over the shitty stuff some people did, which is great because people aren’t just good or evil, people are people.
The only downside I have for this book are the illustrations, I did not like the art style, but that’s personal preference that doesn’t really make a difference to the contents of the book. If you want to get one of these books about kickass women, I’d recommend you getting this one, as this one is the most complete and fun to read!
