I always forget how much I love children’s fantasy books, which is weird, because I even wrote one myself! Now, I picked up this book after I saw it on sale on bookdepository, and what a great find it was!
But, what is this book about?
Forbidden to leave her island, Isabella Riosse dreams of the faraway lands her father once mapped.
When her closest friend disappears into the island’s Forgotten Territories, she volunteers to guide the search. As a cartographer’s daughter, she’s equipped with elaborate ink maps and knowledge of the stars, and is eager to navigate the island’s forgotten heart.
But the world beyond the walls is a monster-filled wasteland – and beneath the dry rivers and smoking mountains, a legendary fire demon is stirring from its sleep. Soon, following her map, her heart and an ancient myth, Isabella discovers the true end of her journey: to save the island itself.
Sounds interesting all ready, doesn’t it? I really liked this story! That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have downsides though, the story started off really slow and the overall tone of the book is quite depressing (honestly, I can understand why, but usually children’s fantasy does have a less heavy tone to the writing).
I also didn’t really like the ending, it felt really rushed and I was left with quite some questions unanswered.
I did really like the story though! It was quite realistic (as far fantasy can be realistic) and female friendships! So so so important. The friendship between Isabella and Lupe was amazing and exactly how friendship should be. Oh, and I cried because of this book. Not proper Little Women crying (I only had to hear a certain name weeks after I read it and I would cry again), but I did sob for a bit.
Honestly, this is a great introduction to fantasy and the story is really great. I definitely recommend this to children and grown ups alike!
